How to make sugarcane bagasse tableware?

Sep.14, 2022

With the rapid economic development, it is often accompanied by increasingly serious environmental problems. The excessive consumption of resources and energy are threating to human survival that makes the world set off a green wave with the protection of ecological environment as the core. Green packaging is an important part of this trend. It refers to moderate packaging that can be recycled, or naturally degraded, which does not cause harm to human body and the environment throughout the production cycle of the product. Developed countries in the world have proposed "3R1D" for the development of green packaging, namely Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Degradable.

Therefore, green packaging is green packaging material. In such a background, the original popular, fast and convenient non-degradable disposable foaming tableware by the relevant departments of the state as a deadline to eliminate products.

What is degradable and compostable?

Degradable means that it can be decomposed by the action of microorganisms or other bodies, and compostable refers to materials that can be used to make compost.

Many products on the market that are claimed to be biodegradable are actually not compostable and healthy and environmentally friendly. Degradability is often used as a means of publicity, because virtually all substances on the earth can be said to be degradable, but the length of time for degradation is different. For example, it takes more than a hundred years for polyethylene to degrade in the environment. But the compostable product can be turned into a sanitary, odorless organic fertilizer, which can be used as fertilizer for plants and soil improvement. Therefore, environmentally friendly products are recommended to use products that are truly biodegradation and non-polluting materials.

Is there a material that can also use plant fiber instead of wood pulp?

By using crops instead of forests, we are replacing one raw material with another. Fiber crops need more water and energy to grow. Therefore, we focus on the by-products of crops, such as the broken sugarcane left after sugarcane refining, bagasse with fibrous stems.

What is bagasse? How to make plates and bowls?

Bagasse pulp tableware is made of one-year-old non-wood plant fiber (bagasse) as raw material. After processing, it becomes pulp. The pulp is formed by vacuum adsorption through a mold, dried, and then processed by high-tech science and technology. Sugarcane pulp tableware is suitable for microwave oven drying Bake, freeze and keep fresh in the refrigerator, have recycling value, fertilizer can be recycled, naturally degraded and muddy into organic fertilizer, it is a relatively environmentally friendly tableware.

Sugarcane pulp is very suitable for tableware, due to its thermal resistant, it can be microwave safe and can be used to reheat food. Bagasse tableware more durable and firmer than polystyrene containers due to the fibrous texture. Also it can be refrigerator safe and therefore can be used to store food until consumption. Bagasse container has insulation properties that retain heat for a longer time compared to paper and plastic container. Sugarcane pulp food container are eco-friendly alternatives to plastic containers because they are completely compostable. The rate of decomposition can vary depending on the temperature, turnover rate, and moisture. Faster decomposition can be achieved if the bagasse container is broken into smaller pieces. Therefore are increasingly used by wholesale soft drinks suppliers.

The catering and hospitality industries have seen a spike in the use of bagasse food containers because of their environment-friendly properties. Their sturdiness and superior thermal properties also have made consumers prefer them over other disposable food containers and tableware.

The advantages of paper pulp tableware products

Tableware use the 100% annual growth, such as bagasse pulp of non-wood plant fibers as raw material, through the high and new science and technology, with food-grade waterproof and oil resistant additives, make pulp tableware has the following advantages:

  ● Resisting hot oil and boiling water, not seepage.

  ● Conserving resources and protecting the environment.

  ● In the process of production, no pollution but only steam emissions. It is “coming from nature, and back to the nature”.

The process of making sugarcane bagasse tableware:

Pulping process

In order to improve the toughness of the product, we use high quality short fiber pulp such as sugarcane pulp as the main raw material, and mix it with the others materials according to a certain churn degree and a certain concentration.About the Pulping process, soaking sugarcane pulp is the first step , and then raw material needs to be broken up by the hydraulic turbine pulper,so that the fiber can be separated and saponified to improve the binding capacity of the fiber.During this period, relevant supplementary materials should be added into so as to improving the high temperature and water resistance of the product.

Molding process

The molding process is making raw pulp into a certain shape which is half wet and semifinished products, and this is the key procedure in the process, about 95% of the water in the pulp is discharged when molding. Therefore, it plays a decisive role for the product quality, energy consumption and the production efficiency and breakage. The molding quality depends on the forming machine, molding mode, the structure, the mold quality and the the original pulp etc.

Moulding pressing and drying and process

Using the professional mold machine to remove the water in the pulp tableware prototype for reducing the drying dehydration cost, that is called moulding pressing. Drying is the use of the heat which is from copper mold to heat the product to remove the remaining moisture from the product ,it`s also a disinfection process. Due to lots of thermal energy consumption in baking process, the thermal energy consumption is about300 times compared with forming dehydration costs, so we should design the whole baking process reasonable to save cost, it has become the main ways for the pulp tableware enterprises to improve the economic benefit.

Shaping and trimming process

This process is molded with hot extrusion forming, and then press polish to eliminate the network marks during the molding process, which will make the internal and external surface smooth.According to the demand of different customers, it also can be customized by marking given words and pattern. At the same time, cutting the burr on the edge of the tableware, and Make the product more perfect and beautiful.

Testing & Packaging

Test the oil resistance and water resistance of bagasse tableware. Final product packaging and storage. Strict packaging procedures and storage environment.
